Grupo Mayohuacán

Biografie

Mayohuacán has the great virtue of being among those who will never be forgotten on every stage, and song. This group was created more than 30 years ago by young students from Havana University  that at that time decided to gather with the purpose of singing songs from the New Trova Movement, Latin America, and the so-called "protest-songs". Since then, its members, songs and musical instruments have changed, but the renovating spirit and will to do their outmost for a common objective, constitute elements enshrined in the work of both its founders and its youngest members.
Since its inception, Mayohuacán has succeeded  -- one may call it dexterity or simply professional instinct-- in choosing the works that, performed by them, get widely disseminated and popular. Songs like "Carapacho pa'la jicotea", "Serenata y tambor", "Tumba francesa" and "Por una melodía",  have become first-rate hits in many radio and television programs.
Recently,  both its repe rtoire and its musical arrangements have been aimed at presenting a Cuban deeply rooted artistic proposal based on unusual texts and melodies within the dancing music sphere. Therefore, the son is present, in different styles, in themes like "Carolina", "Caballero, qué calor", "No te duermas, camarón" and others. The so Cuban BOLERO is present in "Hay días en que el tiempo". "SUCU SUCU ahora" is typical from the Isle of Youth. And even a sort of tribute to the ORGANO ORIENTAL -- a typical manifestation of this eastern region in the country-- can be found in "Carapacho pa'la jicotea."
In general, the texts constitute an interesting aesthetic and conceptual proposal. The musical arrangements, aimed at combining this interest with elements and forms of the dancing music, allow Mayohuacán to please on one hand, an audience willing to listen to its music and, on the other, an audience whose only intention is meeting with friends to collectively enjoy the rhythms, happiness and dance.
