Biografie

Guitar player, composer and recording producer.

Rey Guerra Gómez was born on March 24, 1958 in Villa Clara province, Cuba. He began studying music under the guidance of Domingo Carvajal in Santa Clara City. Afterwards, he enrolled at the National School of Art and the Higher Institute of Art where he received classes from Master Leo Brouwer.

Rey Guerra has participated in a number of festivals, specially: the Havana International Guitar Festival; the Volos International Festival, in Greece; the International Guitar Festival in Bratislava; the International Guitar Festival in Ankara, Turkey; the International Festival of Art in Istanbul, Turkey; the Limasol Festival in Cyprus; the International Guitar Festival in Esztergom, Hungary; the International Festival of the New Latin American Cinema (at the Inaugural Ceremony, as soloist with the National Symphonic Orchestra conducted by Master Leo Brouwer in December 1998) and many others.

He has offered recitals and concerts in important halls, such as the Metropolitan Opera House in New York and the Kennedy Center in Washington, together with the Cuban National Ballet in 1979; the Tchaikovski Hall in Moscow; the Chopin and Bydgoch Halls in Poland; the Tonniolo Theater in Mestre, Italy; the "Concertgebow" in Amsterdam, together with Leo Brouwer and Franz Bruggen; the Maegth Goundation in Niza, France, together with Leo Brouwer; the Prague Atrium; the National Auditorium in Mexico, together with Silvio Rodríguez in March 1998; the "Las ventas" Auditorium in Madrid, Spain, together with Silvio Rodríguez; and in many other important places. Rey Guerra performed as soloist with the National Symphonic Orchestra of Cuba conducted by Master Leo Brouwer.

He was professor of the guitar faculty at the Higher Institute of Art and gave masterly classes in Mexico, Turkey, the Netherlands, Greece and Austria, as well as in the Columbia Guitar Studio in Maryland, the United States.

His recitals and concerts have been broadcast by the BBC from London, the Istanbul Radio, the Washington Radio and the Spanish Television.

He has received important awards, namely:

1974 and 1975: First Prize at the "Amadeo Roldán" National Guitar Contest, Cuba.
1981: First Prize awarded by the Union of Cuban Artists and Writers.
1982: Second Prize, Award for Best Interpretation of Cuban Music and the Masaru Kohno Special Award at the First Contest and International Guitar Festival in Havana, Cuba.
1981: Decorated at the Marneurkirchen International Contest in Germany.
1992: EGREM Great Award and Award under the Concert Music category for the record entitled "Concierto de Toronto".
1997: EGREM Award for the record entitled "Cantos de la Fuente".
2000: Musical Production Award, Cubadisco Fair.
